What Is ECO4?

ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation) requires larger energy suppliers to fund insulation and heating upgrades for low-income households and those living in inefficient homes. It was due to end on 31 March 2026 but has been extended to 31 December 2026, and the cost to eligible households is £0.

You may qualify for ECO4 if you own your home or rent privately, and you or someone in your household receives one or more of the following benefits:

No benefits? Two more routes may apply

• Low EPC route: You may also qualify if your home has an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D, E, F or G — even if you receive no benefits — subject to local authority flex rules.
• Local authority flex: Many councils have extended ECO4 to households with income under a certain threshold (often around £36,000) or with specific health conditions affected by cold homes.
